The Cordell-Lorenz Observatory at Sewanee, and the minor planet Cordellorenz were both named after Francis Merritt Cordell and Philip Jack Lorenz, American astronomers.

He was a physics professor at Kentucky Wesleyan. He was professor emeriti of physics and astronomy at the University of the South in Sewanee. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, and a son.
