Born in Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland. Newbridge identified in death record. Newbridge is about 27 miles (43 km) SW of Dublin.

?Arrival - 30 May 1848 — Age: 18. New York, New York, USA Patt Dowling. Arrival:30 May 1848. Born:abt 1828. Age:20. Male. Port of Depart:Limerick, Ireland. Port of Arrival: New York,NY. Ship Name: Heather Bell. Also, Eliza Hickey (age?), Michael Hickey 21(male, laborer) & Hannah? Dowling (25,spinster).

Relative remembers story that Patrick arrived as indentured laborer to ship Captain in exchange for passage. Laboring rights were then transferred to someone in the U.S. (no confirmation)

Granddaughter recalled that Patrick and Anna were young when they came to U.S. - into Cleveland.

Granddaughter recalled in letter that there were several brothers ... Patrick's brothers fought on opposite sides in the Civil War. At least one ended up in Alabama. Grandson later visited as evidenced by note in his railroad planner and reports of relatives.

Married Ann Hickey abt 1860. 1900 Census shows they had been married 40 years. First child, Mary, born abt 1860 in April? She was 2 at time.

At age 37 in Ohio ... appears on military pension record for John Dowling (cousin? supposedly not related, but perhaps only said so and/or was allowed since not immediate relative). Patrick gave testimony that he had worked with John from 1867 to Jul 1877 on Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad track. Michael Dowling witnessed Patrick's signed X. (brother?)
