RON KOSTELNIK, FOOTBALL GREAT: - February 1, 1993

Ron Kostelnik, a former University of Cincinnati football star who was a defensive lineman on two Super Bowl teams with the Green Bay Packers, died Friday.

The 53-year-old Colver, Pa., native suffered a heart attack while driving back to his Wisconsin home from Florida, said Packers spokeswoman Shirley Leonard. Mr. Kostelnik's car hit a dirt mound on Interstate 75 near Georgetown, Ky. His wife, Margaret "Peggy" Kostelnik, suffered abrasions, Ms. Leonard said.

Mr. Kostelnik played in the 1967 and 1968 Super Bowl games under coach Vince Lombardi. He joined the Packers in 1961 from UC and played through the 1968 season. He was traded to the Baltimore Colts in 1969 and retired that year. He was a starter with the Packers on their championship teams in 1962, 1965 and 1966.

Kostelnik was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UC Hall of Fame in 1985.

"He was 255 pounds when we recruited him as a prospect for our football team. He was very adept especially at playing defense and that's why Vince Lombardi signed him to play," recalls George Blackburn, UC coach from 1958-1960.

Kostelnik earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at UC.

He joined Mainline Industrial Distributors in Appleton, Wis., in 1965 and became company president in 1970.

Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Therese Church, Appleton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to a scholarship being established at UC.
