Elmer Eugene Long. Jr., 79, of 2208 Woodland Avenue, New Bern, NC died on December 23. 1995 at Craven Regional Medical Center as a result of a massive heart attack.
Mr. Long was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. He was the National Secretary for the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor and was a past National Commander. He was Adjutant and Treasurer of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 40. He was a life time member of DAV, The Retired Officer Assoc., VFW, Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Mustang Assoc., Sixth Marine Division, and was a member of Craven County Veterana Council. Mr. Long was a Japanese POW for 3 1/2 years. His service awards include two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington. VA Wednesday, January 3, 1996 at 11:00 a.m.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Long: two sons, Michael E. Long of Upper Marlboro, MD and Elmer E. Long, III of Waldorf, MD; one brother, Preston E. Long of Williamsport, MD; two sisters, Ruth Singer of Frederick, MD and Beatrice Shuff of Walkersville, MD; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family received friends Tuesday, December 26, 1995 at Cotton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers of donations were made to one of the following: The ADBC, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 401 or to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1605 Neuse Blvd., New Bern. NC 28660
