Generally credited as the "creator" of the cheese hamburger (commonly refered to as the cheeseburger). He was a short-order cook at his father's eatery, "The Rite Spot", located on the western edge of Pasadena, CA, sometime between the years 1924-1926 when he was about the age of at least 16. There are several conflicting accounts as to how the cheeseburger first came into being, and to this day it remains unsettled and unclear as to how exactly the nationally renowned "now-ubiquitous American sandwich" (as termed in the L.A. Times) was first formed, whether was either founded by happy accident, on purpose, happenstance or a mistake cover-up. According to popular legend, one story has it that he concocted the item when placing a slice of American cheese on a frying hamburger patty as an experiment. Another theory explains that a derelict entering the establishment from Colorado Blvd requested the meal specifically and Sternberger made his development right then and there. A third handed-down tale describes where he inadvertently burned a burger patty and slapped on a cheese slice to mask his error. However, the belief that he was the true sole "inventor" is still apocryphal and debatable as at least two other restaurants in the U.S. (in Louisville and Denver) also lay claim to the cheeseburger recipe.
