Retired U.S. Army Col. Robert G. Platt, 95, of Carmichael, Calif., formerly of Otsego, passed away on July 9, 2010, in Carmichael, Calif. He was born on May 18, 1915, in Redford, the son of Fred and Coral Platt. He graduated in 1933 from Otsego High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1939. Bob had a 30-year career in the U.S. Army, rising rapidly in rank. He was promoted to colonel in 1955. He served in Asia, Germany and throughout the United States. Bob earned numerous military awards, served as commandant of the U.S. Army Adjutant General School and headed the MSU ROTC program during the Vietnam War. He attended the U.S. Army War College and earned a Master of Arts degree from George Washington University in 1961. He retired in 1969 and was inducted into the MSU Army ROTC Hall of Fame in 1999. Following the death of his first wife, Bob married Willeen Timmons in Michigan and moved to Sacramento, Calif., in 1974. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years; daughters Marilyn (David) Porter and Karen (Mike) Maillet; stepsons Michael (Moragh) Timmons and David (Nancy) Timmons; brothers Ray Platt of Stayton, Ore., and Ralph "Red" Platt of Rockford, Ill.; sister Hazel (Platt) Brown of Allegan; brother-in-law Dean Shaver; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Leona Platt; daughter Marcia Platt; and sister Carol (Platt) Tompkins. He was a kind, honest and generous man who took care of those around him. He will be greatly missed. A memorial gathering was Tuesday, July 13, in the Fireside Room at Eskaton Village, Carmichael, Calif. Interment was at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, Calif.
