James Tostrup, 76, died on Sunday, February 19, 2012 while going for a Sunday drive with his youngest daughter and youngest granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 24, 2012 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating.

James Arthur Tostrup was born on May 10, 1935 in Viking, MN the son of John and Mabel (Urdahl) Tostrup. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, MN. He attended the Gustafson Country School in Viking Township, Viking Elementary School and Newfolden High School.

Following high school, James worked on the farm for Dale and Kenneth Peterson near Warren, MN.

On March 23, 1957, James was united in marriage to Ruth Ada Hanson at the Viking Covenant Church in Viking, MN. To this union four children were born, Faylin, John, Naomi, and James. The first two years of their marriage, James and Ruth worked for Clyde and Verna Christensen near Thief River Falls. In 1960, James went to work for Border Drug in Thief River Falls where he worked for the next eight years delivering sundry items throughout the region.

In 1964, the family made their home on the Rud farm south of Viking, MN where they operated a small grain and dairy farm. At that time, James also worked nights at Shetler's in Thief River Falls. In 1967, the family purchased the Martin and Lucille Nelson farm southeast of Newfolden, MN where they continued to farm and raise their family. James also worked for a short time at Arctic Cat, and from there spent 24 campaigns at the American Crystal Sugar Company in Drayton, ND.

James considered it a privilege to farm with the help and support of his wife and children. He was very proud of his Norwegian Heritage and his family history including his Grandpa Mathias Tostrup who was one of the first white settlers in the area that later became Viking, MN. Mathias also donated the land for the Viking Cemetery. In the later years, he enjoyed the thrashing shows and bluegrass festivals.
