Orpha's mother died in December of 1832, when Orpha was only a few months old. Her father remarried twice more, with his second wife Sally Burrell also dying very young, but his third wife, the widow Susan Strong Gates Eldred, staying at his side for the remainder of their lives.
Orpha had 4 older siblings from her mother (although her older brother Jacob Hathaway died at the age of 10 months, so Orpha never knew him), and two younger siblings from her father and stepmother Susan.
It is unknown how much time Orpha actually spent under her father's roof after her mother's death. The 1850 U.S. Census records Orpha as living with her maternal grandparents in Fort Ann, Washington, New York as an 18-year-old young woman, while her father, step-mother, and siblings are recorded as living together in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.
Whether this separation was because of emotional preference, or simply out of some practical considerations or family commitments with her grandparents, is not clear. However, Orpha is named and left a bequest in the last will and testament of her step-mother, so there seems to have been some warmth or at least respect within the blended family of Phineas Hathaway.
By 1867, Orpha had also moved to Indiana: she was married in Tippecanoe County on 15 Oct 1867 to Josiah Gadgcombe, a farmer who originally hailed from England.
The couple were blessed with a son, William.
