Charles W. Bateman, 82, of 1523 Elm St., former supermarket manager, died yesterday in Faxton Hospital.

Mr. Bateman was born in Sangerfield. He attended Utica schools. In 1906, he married Mary McKenna in Utica. She died in 1946.

For several years, Mr. Bateman was the manager of the former A&P Super Market at Steuben and Wall Streets. During Worlds War II he was employed by Savage Arms Corp.. Before his retirement in 1952 he was employed by Yahnundasis Golf Club and the John Eckmair Restaurant.

Mr. Bateman was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and a life member of the Utica Maennerchor.

He leaves two daughters, Mrs. (Lynn) Mary Williams and Miss Dorothy J. Bateman, both of Utica; two sons, Charles G. of Utica and Richard O. of New Hartford and a sister, Mrs. Ann Marsh of Utica.

The funeral will be at 8:30 tomorrow from the Williams Funeral Home and at 9 from St. Francis de Sales Church with a solemn requiem Mass. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
