Mariano Castro, son of Joaquin Ysidro Castro and Maria Martina Botiller was born about 1764-65 at Villa de Sinaloa. He was 14 yrs old when his father was recruited on 28 Apr 1775 for the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition of 1775-76 to Alta California.

Mariano married Maria Josefa Romero at the Presidio of Santa Barbara on 19 Feb 1791. [BP 00010 ECPP]. At that time he was "soldado de cuera del Real Presidio de San Carlos"
Due to his military assignments their 10 children were born and baptized at Missions San Carlos, San Antonio de Padua, San Luis Obispo, and San Juan Bautista.

On the 26th of January, 1830 Mariano Castro, of the Rancho de las Animas was given a Christian burial by Fr Felipe Arroyo de la Cuesta [SJB Burials 02645 ECPP]
