William F. Zilmer, Sr., a resident of Monroe for more than 60 years, passed away at his home, 623 Main street, early this morning.

Mr. Zilmer had been ailing since the first of the year suffering from a general breakdown, due to old age. He was confined to bed part of the time. Possessed of a strong constitution he was able at intervals to be up and about until two weeks ago, when his condition grew worse.

Made Hard Struggle.

Several times since, his life had been despaired of, but a number of times he rallied and was well enough to converse with member of this family. During the past week, however, he slept most of the time and he endured severe pain. He was kept under the influence of opiates the past few days to relieve his suffering. He grew weaker daily until the end came at 4 o'clock this morning.

Born In Germany.

Mr. Zilmer was born at Doelitz, Germany October 3, 1835. Had he lived until fall, he would have been 86 years of age. He was a son of Mr and Mrs. G. Zilmer. In 1852, when 17, he came to America and Settled at Watertown. Five years later, in 1857, he came to Monroe and the same year he was united in marriage to Sophia D. Beckman of this city.

In The Civil War.

During the Civil war Mr. Zilmer enlisted for service January 23, 1864, and was mustered out June 13, 1865. He was a member of Co. H. 31st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Following his return from war, Mr. and Mrs. Zilmer lived for a time on a farm in Washington township. Mr. Zilmer conducted a blacksmith shop in connection with his farm work. A short time later, he gave up farming and came to Monroe, engaging in the blacksmith business. He purchased the site now owned by Knipschild Bros. and conducted the business or more than 20 years. Mr. and Mrs. Zilmer lived at Hawkeye, Iowa, for a short time. Mrs. Zilmer passed away in Monroe April 8, 1901.

Funeral services for Mr. Zilmer's grandson, Sergt. Glenn R. Zilmer, were held Sunday. Deep sympathy is felt for the family who will be called upon to attend the funeral of two loved ones within a week.
