He was born in Cammin, Pommern (Pomerania), Prussia, an area that is now part part of Poland. He and his siblings, Herman and Wilhelm Friedrich with their parents Michael Frederick and Christine (Ramthun) Nohr, left their home in Cammin, boarded the Stephani in Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York harbor on 10 August 1841. The family initially settled in Jackson Township, Washington County, Wisconsin, where August met and married his wife Wilhelmine Brockhaus. Five of their children, Mary Louisa, Albert F. A. , Louis, Henry F., and Bertha were born here. On 30 October 1857, August purchased 40 acres of land in Jackson Township.

He apparently sold the land not long afterwards, and moved his family to Morrison Township, Brown County, Wisconsin because records for their son, Franz "Frank" Nohr claim he was born in Morrison and the family is recorded living here when the 1860 census was taken August 14th. Their children Christina Marie, Roselena, William F., John and Emma J. were born here.

August was drafted by the Union Army on 4 October 1864, serving as a private in Wisconsin's 18th Infantry, Company F. He was mustered out on 18 July 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Land records show that August owned 160 acres in Morrison Township by 1889.

It is presumed that he died at home. He was survived by his wife, Wilhelmine, and children, Mary Louisa, Albert F. A., Louis, Henry F., Christina Maria, Roselena, William F, John and Emma J. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Frederick and Christina (Ramthun) Nohr, his brother Wilhelm, his son Franz (Frank) and his daughter Bertha.

Note: his birth date per his headstone inscription does not agree with his birth date as provided by Pomerania, Germany, Parish Register Transcripts for Cammin, Pommern, where he and his brothers were born. The baptism record is deemed correct since it's an original source; the headstone inscription is considered a secondary source for his date of birth.
