Born in Wells (then in New York), Silas was one of twelve children born to Elijah and Lorinda Pember Terry in 1800. On September 18, 1821, he married Polly Powers (daughter of Rev. Simeon Powers Jr and the former Polly (Mary) Goodyear). Together they raised nine children in Chautauqua, New York:
