United States Navy Vice-Admiral. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1914 and served in World War I. He was the commanding officer of the battleship Maryland in the South Pacific in 1943. After participating in the assault and capture of Tarawa, he was named sub-area commander of the South Pacific. He commanded the Norfolk Navy Yard from 1944 until his retirement in 1946.
