Wilbur Hiram McVay, 81, of Boone, died Wednesday, March 3, at Boone County Hospital. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery near Luther. Wilbur Hiram McVay was born March 30, 1922, in Boone County, the son of Ethel Mae (Anderson) and Charles Orien McVay. He graduated from Luther High School and attended Iowa State College for three years, studying architectural engineering. He was drafted for the U.S. Army in World War II and was sent to Portland, Ore., to join the 29th Engineer Topographic Battalion where he was a draftsman on battle maps. Toward the end of the war, the battalion was sent to Manila, the Philippine Islands for a year. After the war, Wilbur farmed with his father on the farm that his great-grandfather had started in 1860 in Colfax Township. He retired in 1985 and for the next 10 years did volunteer work at the Iowa Arboretum. He moved to Eastern Star Home in 1998 in Boone. He had many interests besides farming, including travel, gardening, photography and reading. He spent part of 34 summers in Colorado, where he worked at a summer resort. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Boone and the Iowa Arboretum. He is survived by one sister, Norene Hurley of Madrid; two nephews, Lowell (Debbie) Hurley of Boone and Lynn Hurley of Boone; great nieces and nephews, Erin, Matthew and Kyle Hurley of Boone, Tanya Hurley of Boone and Clint (Jamie) Hurley of Thetford, England
