Well-Known Smithsburg Man Takes His Life Martin L. Hoover, one of the best-known citizens of Smithsburg district, and likewise one of the town's most highly respected citizens, committed suicide, Thursday, by hanging himself to a rafter in the garrett of his new home. No reason can be assigned for Mr. Hoover's act, unless he was suddenly stricken with insanity. He was apparently one of the happiest men of Smithsburg, and seem to enjoy life to the utmost and was well provided with this world's goods.
He was aged 72 years and spent nearly all his life in farming, removing to Smithsburg, two years ago.
Thursday morning he arose as usual but when breakfast had been prepared and he had not appeared, his wife called him. Getting no answer, she went through the house until she found him hanging in the attic.
He was an active member of the Lutheran church of Smithsburg.
He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Besore before marriage, and two sons, George D. Hoover, Smithsburg, and Jeremiah Hoover, an attorney-at-law at Newark, N.J.
He had relatives in Waynesboro.
