Melvin Whitley Bartholomew, affectionately known as Bart, went to be with his Lord and Savior, September 22, 2010 following an extended illness.

Bart demonstrated an endless display of affection for his family, friends, and co-worker, and was a real people person. He was the eternal optimist and a spiritual leader and role model for his family.

Bart lived a very fulfilling life serving in World War II in the 44th Division, Field Artillery and was a proud recipient of a Bronze Star. He worked most of his life in the grocery industry, 46 plus years, with Piggly Wiggly and Winn Dixie.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by his wife and partner of 66 years, Sarah Johnson Bartholomew.

He is also survived by his three sons, Melvin Richard Bartholomew and his wife, Sandy of Raleigh, Larry Collins Bartholomew and his wife, Mary of Surf City, Timothy Wayne Bartholomew and his wife, Kaye of Raleigh.

He is also survived by his six wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Eugene Bartholomew and his wife, Kitty of Raleigh, John Bartholomew of Knightdale and Lewis Bartholomew of Raleigh.

Bart was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Whitley Bartholomew and Ila Francis Yates Bartholomew and sisters, Mary Goodwin and Evelyn Sealey.

Graveside service 12:00 noon Friday, September 24, 2010 at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, 4301 Louisburg Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.
The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at New Hope Baptist Church.
