Ernest Fiedler, Sr., whose death was announced in these columns last week as having occurred on Monday, Feb 19, at his home in Oak Grove, was born in Saxony, Germany, Feb. 2, 1824, and in 1854 immigrated to America and settled at Port Washington, Wis., where he was married to Miss Augusta Wenzel, to which union ten children were born, nine sons and a daughter, of whom five sons and the mother survive him. The sons are Otto, Edward, Herman, Peter and Ernest, all of whom are married with the exception of Peter, who lives with the mother.
In 1865 Mr. Fiedler answered to the call of his adopted country and enlisted and served in the Civil war as a private in company E of the fifty-second regiment of Wisconsin infantry. After being mustered out of service at Fort Leavenworth he returned to Wisconsin and in 1867 located on a farm five miles east of Prescott, which has been his home up to the time of his death.
Ernest Fiedler was an honorable and respected man, a patriotic and good citizen and a kind and loving father, who will be sadly missed by his family and all who had his friendship. To the honor of him and his good wife it can be said that they prospered not only in a material way but that they and their family have always had the respect and confidence of the entire community. The aged mother in her declining years will have the care and love of her children as a solace to her grief.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church last Thursday afternoon and interment took place on Pine Glen cemetery.
Those who had come from a distance to attend the funeral were Louis Wenzel of Milnore, N. D., Herman Wenzel and daughter Augusta of Ellsworth and Otto Wenzel and wife of River Falls. Of the children all were present, Ernest Fiedler, Jr.,and his wife coming from St. Paul.
The funeral was in charge of Undertaker H. J. Keeler and the services were conducted by Rev. J. Herzog. The G. A. R. ritual was observed in the service at the cemetery.
The deceased reached an age of 85 years and his death was due largely to the infirmaties of old age.
