Joseph (Joe) W. Hindera, Sterling, died Friday, June 22, 1990, at Johnson County Hospital, Tecumseh. He was horn Nov. 17, 1922, at Smartville (now St. Mary) to John and Anna (Hupka) Hindera. He married Donna Jean Schacht Oct. 25, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Hindera farmed for 31 years; owned the St. Mary service station for 10 1/2 years and worked as a foreman on the Johnson County bridge crew for 18 years. He served eight months in the Merchant Marines in World War II. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; and a member of the American Legion and the Eagles.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Jeanette) Harris a Firth; a son,
Michael, of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Dawn and Cindy Harris; three brothers, David Hindera of Fountain Valley, Calif; Adam of Sterling and Tony of St. Mary; and four sisters, Josephine Allen and Loretta Goracke, both of Tecumseh; Mrs. Dick (Alma) Wiebe of Boone, Iowa and Mrs. Joe (Chris) Monteleone of Omaha.

The funeral was Tuesday, June 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Raymond Ham officiating. Pallbearers were Robert Allen, Dennis Hindera, Randy Goracke, Gary Schaeht, Leslie Drake and Daric Stalder. Full military services were conducted by the American Legion. Interment was in the St. Mary Cemetery. Wherry Bros. Mortuary, Tecumseh, was in charge of arrangements.
