Author. She is best known for her short story "The Lottery," but she is also the author of six novels and two best-selling memoirs. Her final two novels, "The Haunting of Hill House," and "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," were adapted for the screen, with "The Haunting" (1963), a major motion picture starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, and "The Haunting" (2018), a major Netflix series. Her writing is enjoying new recognition today for its wry exposure of hypocrisy and dark, irreverent humor.


She married Stanley Edgar Hyman in 1940, and they had four children.
