Jean's mother, Selma, was gravely ill after giving birth to Jean. Selma's sister Mathilda (Anderson) Martinson and her husband Julius brought Jean down to Volga, SD, from her home in Jamestown, ND to raise her in their family. A few months after Jean was born, her mother passed away. A family photo showing Jean with her North Dakota siblings is reassurance that she was aware of the rest of her family.
