First of two children of Augusta Florence (Umbstead) and James J. Collins. Married Lawrence J. McCreary. Mother of Debbie Carol and L. Jay. Sister of Dorothy Caroline. Half sister of Judith (Collins) Clever Brunk and David Arnold (Collins) Clever.
A retired LSU executive secretary with a 20-year career in several departments, she died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at her residence in Baton Rouge. She was 82 and a native of St. Louis. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday until religious service at 2 p.m. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by a daughter, Debbie Carol McCreary Cook, Port Allen; a son, L. Jay McCreary, Slidell; grandsons, Darryl McCreary, Franklin, Tenn., Barrett and Brandon McCreary, both of Slidell, Harvest Reynolds, Port Allen; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Jay McCreary and Liam Padraic McCreary; a sister, Judith Brunk, Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, David Clever, Hoboken, Ga.; and a special friend, Geri Enclade, Florida. Preceded in death by her husband, Coach Jay McCreary; mother, Gussie Umbstead; and a sister, Dorothy Rockwell. Pallbearers will be Darryl McCreary, Barrett McCreary, Brandon McCreary, Harvest Reynolds, Dave Asch and Robert Boden. Honorary pallbearers will be all of "Coach Jay's" former basketball players. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O., and a former executive board member of the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation. Due to her love of animals, please consider a memorial donation to CAAWS or to Hospice of Baton Rouge.
