Stirling Mayes, 91, of Erie died at 5:44 p.m. Monday, January 13, 1997 in his home. He had been ill for many years. Born Dec. 2, 1905, in Middlesboro, KY, he was the son of James and Mattie (Hopper) Mayes. He married Marguerite L. Gates on Oct. 5, 1926, who later succumbed to illness. He married Sally Linkes in Monroe in 1945. Both of his wives preceded him in death. He was employed at Electrolux Vacuums and Knapp Shoes for more than 50 years.Surviving are five sons, Bob of Lambertville, Jerry Costelli of Erie; David Sterling Mayes of Lake City, Fla., Ted of Erie, and Johnny of Monroe; five daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Betty) Uhl of Luna Pier, Mrs. Frank (Shirley) Giljum of Monroe; Mrs. Jack (Melody) Jordan and Velvet Mayes, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and Heather Mayes of Perrysburg, Ohio; a brother, George of Monroe; two sisters, Hazel of Tazewell, Tenn., and Rose of Riverview; 39 grand-children; 56 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.He was an official member of Dundee Baptist Church, Dundee. Visitation was at Bennett Funeral Home, Monroe, and services will be held Ida Missionary Baptist Church, Ida, with the Rev.
