Buckner was one of the last two surviving veterans of the Mexican War. Parents were Charles Buckner and Susan Thorton, both from Virginia.
Buckner served in Company A, First Missouri Mounted Volunteers, and was mustered in at Ft. Leavenworth under Colonel Alexander Doniphan. After the war he tried his luck in the California gold rush.
His two sons preceeded him in death. His daughters are Mrs. F. V. Ragsdale, Paris; Mrs. A. S. Houston, Mexico, Mo.; Mrs. Frank Neate, Columbia, Mo.; Mrs. Fenfro Gibbs, Mexico, and Miss Emma Buckner of the home.
