David Gilbert was born in 1796 in Newberry Co., SC to Thomas Gilbert and Rebecca Gauntt.

His first wife was Hester Edmundson who bore him children Carey and Rebecca, but she died as a very young woman and is buried in Newberry County. Hester's father was John Edmundson, and his will in Giles County references Carey and Rebecca as grandchildren.

David next married Catherine Eichelberger Counts who was the mother of his daughter Susan, but she likewise died young and is buried in Newberry County.

Before moving to Limestone Co., AL in the early 1830s, he married again in Newberry County. This woman he married was believed to be named Mary O'Neal, but no solid paper source for that is known. Descendant Paul Gilbert, however, has done extensive analysis on his autosomal DNA, and there is strong DNA support for her being the daughter of Henry Frost O'Neal of Newbery County. "Mary" was born between 1810 and 1815 according to the censuses, and she died before 1845 after having bore sons Thomas H., John E., George A., and Van Buren Gilbert.

After Mary's death, David married Louisa Hammonds who was the mother of his daughter Ellen and son James Monroe.

After Louisa died in 1848, he then married Anna Mary (aka Mary Ann) Eichelberger Kibler, sister of his second wife Catherine. She was an older woman still in Newberry County and the widow of John Kibler . Researcher Leonides Cousins found a deed record dated Nov. of 1848 in Newberry that deals with Anna Mary's property and references her impending marriage to David Gilbert of Limestone County. (Source: Deed Records 1845-1856, Book DD, pp. 144, FamilySearch Image 296 of 958.) Anna Mary and David had no children.

After Anna Mary's death in 1850, he married Elizabeth Pettus of Madison Co., AL who bore his youngest son William (Willie). Their marriage can be confirmed by Elizabeth's father's will in Madison County. Elizabeth would remarkably outlive him.

Please note that there is a Limestone County history book with several pieces of dubious information, including a reference that says David had seven wives. There is no evidence of this, and if you look at last wife Elizabeth's memorial, you'll see a death notice that says she was his sixth wife.
