Confederate States of America Casulty. He was the son of Lawson and Nancy Weston Farmer. He was wounded at the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia on July 30, 1864. He had a "gunshot wound of the abdomen, right lumbar region penetrating abdomial cavity." He died on July 31, 1864 at the Confederate States Hospital, Petersburg, VA. John Farmer was a private in Captain F. M. Tucker's Company D, 18th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. The Company subsequently became Company F, 18th Regiment, SC Infantry. There is a plaque on the wall inside the church which lists the South Carolina dead. Among then was "J. R. Farmer, Private".
