James Lawrence Abbott, eldest son of George W. Abbott and the former Miss Ursula Parish, was born on March 2nd 1897 in Guilford County, North Carolina. His family moved around during his early years, before settling near Greensboro, North Carolina.

During World War I, James served in France with the American Expeditionary Forces August 1918 to March 1919.

In 1921, James married Miss Pattie Mae Threewitts, daughter of William Threewitts and the former Miss Margaret Thornton, of Warren County, North Carolina. This union had two known children: a son James Lawrence, Jr. (1922) and Ursula Louise, born on the 1st of October 1923. Sadly, Pattie died from complications from that birth 10 days later.

James and his young daughter lived with his widowed mother and her second husband, Thomas E. Devlin. Several years later they all would move to Santa Barbara, California. Here James lived, dying at the age of 75 on April 18th 1972.

He was laid to rest near his mother, Ursula, step-father, Thomas Devlin and his sister Ursula Bowden in Santa Barbara Cemetery.
