Adam was the only son and youngest child of Solomon & Lydia Hiter-Ryan of Mercer County, Kentucky. He had six sisters; Margaret, Christian, Ella, Catherine and two whose names are unknown. Those two may have died in childhood. The other girls all remained in Kentucky. His parents are presumed to be buried near or in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, KY. Adam was a veteran of the Mexican War, where he lost his left hand from a gunshot inflicted at the Battle of Cerro Gordo in April 1847.

His wife, Nancy Eliza Aldredge is buried in Knox County, Illinois where she died in 1904. He was the father of Leoklas Theodore, Senoretta Cynthia, Harriet Ophelia, Andrew Winfield, Salvadore Huntley, Clara A., and Clio Leon Ryan. Adam Ryan is my gg-grandfather.
