Excerpts from The Carroll Times, Carroll, Iowa Wednesday, May 2, 1928
John J. Beck died at his home, 810 North Clark Street, Thursday morning at 3:40 o'clock after a few hours suffering with an attack of heart trouble................
John Beck was born at Bonnets Mill, Mo. Aug. 10, 1871 and spent most of his boyhood in that state. He was married April 16, 1901, to Miss Anna Wintershied at Murcher, Kan. They made their home in Horton, Kan., until May 5, 1914, when they moved to Carroll. For 30 yeas Mr. Beck followed the trade of barbering and conducted a shop in Carroll until July 1927. He then sold out to his son, Herbert Beck, but had intended to form a partnership with his son, May 1.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs Beck, these with the wife survive. Mr. Beck is also survived by his mother. The children are Hebert, Mrs. Dorothy Schueller, Glenn, Grace, Leila, and Alfred, all of Carroll.
Three brothers and three sisters also survive; Mrs. Lena Broilot of Freeburg, Mo.; Joe Beck of St. Louis, Mo.; Henry Beck, Mrs. Kate Crider, Will Beck, and Mrs. Rose Torsch of Horton, Kan. All....attended the funeral, except Mrs. Lena Broilot and Henry Beck. Joe Beck... was accompanied by his wife.
Mr. Beck was a congenial, sociable man, who had many friends in Carroll, who sincerely regret his death. He built up a large business in this city and was always courteous and accommodating to the trade.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the St. Joseph church of which he was a devout member. The Modern Woodmen of America, to which organization he belonged, attended services in a body.
The pallbearers were Leo Carver, James Wieland, Herman Baumhover, Willam Winniko, Earale Hall and Blane Swartz.
