Robert Thomas Russell, Sr., son of James Vincent and Rose Ruth Alerio Russell, was born April 23, 1936, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. He departed this life Friday, January 13, 2012, in his home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy-five years, eight months, and twenty days.
On August 20, 1961, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Andersen, and to this union two daughters and two sons were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mary Loretta Russell; two brothers, Jerry Russell, and Joe Russell, and his wife, Lois; a sister, Eleanor Gray; a brother-in-law, Ollie Young; and a great-granddaughter, Hailey Dawn.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Evelyn, of the home; two daughters, Loretta Russell Young, and her husband, Garry, and Karen J. Russell, all of Lebanon, Missouri; two sons, Robert T. "Tommy" Russell, Jr., and his wife, Mindi, and Matthew V. Russell, and his wife, Denia, all of Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Nathan, Brennan, Tyler, Brittini, and her husband, Chris, Alex, Dalton, and Dylan; a brother, Gus Russell, and his wife, Anna, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; four sisters, Mary Young, of Marlton, New Jersey, Florence Kromellis, and her husband, John, of Chicago, Illinois, Anna Moore, of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and Gloria Radano, and her husband, Frank, of Folsom, Pennsylvania; a number of nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ronald Russell, of Keithburg, Illinois, and a special niece, Mary Ellen Russell, of Orion, Illinois; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was raised, the youngest of nine children, in the Upper Darby, Pennsylvania area, and attended Catholic School. He worked along side his father in the concrete construction business pouring sidewalks and basements. As a young man, he also started doing auto body work. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer. While stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he met his future wife. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 18, 1961, and two days later married Evelyn. They made their home in Laclede County, Missouri, and lovingly raised their family. Bob was very well known in the Lebanon community having owned and operated the largest independent body shop in this part of the country, Bob Russell Auto, since 1961. Many local boys got their apprenticeships working with Bob, and later went on to have successful careers in the auto industry. The Laclede Vo-Tech Auto Body students also worked for him as well.
Bob was raised in the Catholic faith, and later joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Lebanon, where he was an active member as long as his health allowed.
He belonged to the Lebanon Lions Club for many years, and was a charter member of the Lebanon Antique Car Club. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, building, and in his later years, doing woodworking projects. He was very community minded, as was evidenced when he built a jungle gym for the children at Donnelly Elementary School in the 1970's. The greatest loves of his life were his wife, his children and his grandchildren.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the wonderful memories he made for his family and friends.
