Charles Lewis was the grandnephew of Gen/Pres George Washington. He was pressed into the Royal Navy and served on the 64 gun ship of the line the HMS Belliqueux. His plight and that of his brother John Washington Lewis were cited in Congress in speeches advocating the declaration of War against Great Britain in 1812. Charles and John were released by the Admiralty after intervention by the State Department and they arrived back home just as the War was breaking out.
