Anne Tovey Spear MT. PLEASANT -

Anne Tovey Spear, born 5 April 1932 at Old Roper Hospital, Charleston, SC, daughter of Herman Renneker Tovey and Dorothy Ball Davis.

As a child, Anne spent many days with her grandmother, Annie Caroline Renneker Tovey, at the "old" Jacob Schirmer home located on the Society of Friends (Quaker) Meeting House and Cemetery property at 138 King Street, which is now a parking garage. She also spent many days at the Cosgrove Avenue home of her maternal grandparents, Mattie and Lem Davis.

Anne was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Tovey, a daughter, Cheryl Anne and granddaughters, Lisa Friedman and Rae Lynn Kennington.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, John R. Spear; a sister Dorothy Hermeine Tovey; four children from a previous marriage, Lynda Elaine Hassell of Charleston and her husband John, Susan Loraine McLaughlin of Long Island, NY and husband Tom Mieczkowski, Debra Javaherian of Little Neck, NY and Warren Sanford McLaughlin of Gaston, SC and wife Cindy; two step-daughters, Jennifer Wright and Audrey Haseldon of Mt. Pleasant, SC; ten grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Anne attended Chicora, Kraft and Mitchell Elementary schools and St. Andrews Schools from 5th - 12th grades. While attending St. Andrews High School, she played basketball, during which she was selected as an "All District" guard. She was an active member of the Dramatics Club and appeared in five musicals directed by Bernard Hester. Anne participated in several Charleston Miss Azalea contests, was selected Miss St. Andrews Exchange Club 1948-1949, and Miss Charleston Rotary Club 1949-1950.

Anne worked the last 20 years of her career for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company at the Polaris Missile Facility, Goose Creek, SC. It was there that she met and married, in 1978, Commander John R. Spear, USN who was serving as Facility Executive Officer. After her husband's retirement from the Navy, Anne and her husband were transferred to Newport, RI in 1982, where John worked for General Electric Company. After John's second retirement in 1985, Anne moved with her husband to their retirement home in Bar Harbor, ME. The call of her beloved South Carolina was too strong for her to overcome and they moved back to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 1989.

Anne attended Christ Church in Mt. Pleasant where her ancestor John Metheringham built the first brick church in 1726. She recently transferred back to the Church of the Holy Communion in Charleston which is where she felt "like she had been to church" after attending a service.
