Joseph came to the United States as a young man in 1914 (as reported in the 1920 U.S. Census where he indicates that both of his parents as well as himself were born in Bohemia). He met and married Elsie Hajovsky, daughter of Edward Hajovsky and Marie Pollack Hajovsky.

and on 7 Jan 1920 was working in Zalinski's Bakery as a baker. He, his wife and young daughter, Ella, age 1yr 4mo, were living at 215 East 121st Street, New York City, New York. By 1925, he had another child, Edward, who traveled with the family from Bremen, Germany on 1 Oct 1925 to New York on 12 Oct 1925 on the ship U.S.S. Republic. It is unknown when they traveled to Germany but it was probably some time in 1925.

It is interesting to note that Joseph's military registration cards, filled out by him, indicate two different locations of his birth. In 1917 he reported being born in Bohemia, Austria. In 1942 he listed Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

He was working as a taxi driver in 1942 and did many other kinds of work throughout his life. He and his wife lived in Floral Park, Queens, New York for many years.

Father of
Ella, Edward J and Anna Christine.

Grandfather of Sonny Chase, Joyce Bosc, Steven J Achtner, Alan E Achtner, E.J. Achtner, Lawrence Breite and Valerie Breite Joerger.
