LT. S.E. WOMACK - Killed in Action

The War Department notified Mrs.Edwina(Terry) Womack of the death of her husband,1st Lt. Sollie Womack,who was killed in action somewhere in Germany across the Rhine River. Lt. Wommack has been in service about three years and has been across for seven months. He was 28 years of age. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.E.Wommack live at Centralia. His wife lives with her parents, Mr. And Mrs. A.S. Terry.

First Lt. Sollie E. Womack of Centralia, Texas was wounded March and died March 25 of shrapnel wounds received in action against the enemy near Linz, Germany.He died in the Thirteenth Field Hospital and was buried in an American Cemetery near Aubel, Belgium.
Lt. Womack was a graduate of Groveton High School in the class of '35 and at the time of his induction into the service was attending Sam Houston State Teachers College. He was inducted into the service February 9,1942 and received his commission as Second Lt. At Ft.Benning,Georgia, October 6, 1942.
Lt. Womack had been overseas for six and one half months at the time of his death. Five and half months of this time was spent in combat. He was with the 99 division, which played a big part in stopping the Germans during the Belgian Bulge. His division was the first to cross East of the Rhine. A quotation from his commanding officer stated "Sollie was indeed a worthy soldier of our country, a credit to himself and his comrades. His performance of duty was in the highest traditions of the American officer. He died offering himself that we might live, 'greater love than this hath no man than he lay down his life for his friends.
