Obituary for George Jacob Hesser from the Frederick News of November 5, 1908:
"George Jacob Hesser died at Graceham this county, on 27 October (1908). He was a son of George and Amy Hesser, and was born at Creagerstown on December 6, 1838. Later the family moved to Graceham and united with the Moravian church. Mr. Hesser, having been baptized in infancy, was one of a class of seven confirmed by Rev. Benjamin Rickseeker, on Whit Sunday, May 11, 1850. He was united in marriage to Eliza S. Newman on December 30, 1860 by the Rev. Henry Baughman. Twenty years ago a severe attack of grip, [viral influenza] left him with a chronic cough, and during the last 10 years his health failed rapidly. Three years ago his ailment assumed a more serious nature and compelled him gradually to relinquish his work. The last year was one of severe suffering which undermined his constitution entirely. His age was 69 years, 10 months, and 21 days. His life was a very useful one, both in the church and neighborhood. As a blacksmith, he was a complete master of his trade, and all his business life was characterized by energy, thoroughness, and sincerity. He was a good husband and father, a highly respected citizen and neighbor, and a well and favorably known member of the community. In the church, he was known as active and consistent Christian. For 20 years, he served as sexton, and for many years he was a member of the Board of Trustees. He was interested in the work of the Sunday school, and for a long time taught a class of boys. As long as he was able, he faithfully attended all the services of the church, and was ever ready to lend a hand in all kinds of church work."
