It is the incription for Polly's headstone in the original transcription book of the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery that led to the connection to her parents and correction of their last name "Woodmansee," which was originally noted as "Woodman" in the records of the Sheldon Family Association. The inscription reads "dau of BB and SM," a match to Bradley B. and Sylphina M. (Sheldon) Woodmansee of LaGrange.

The week of Thanksgiving 2004, the author visited the Lorain County Historical Society, yet the offices were closed for decorating. Explaining that I traveled from Mesa, Arizona for research, members of the Society allowed me to enter The Hickories and they led me to a small library upstairs. There, I opened the transcription book and began to search for a list of names noted in my journal. While the transcription was originally online as LA-1 and LA-2, and although I had noted a transcription for Polly Woodmansee before, it was that moment that I read "dau of BB and SM," and when the initials became an obvious match to her parents. I had been searching for "Woodman" instead, as it is noted in the 1840 US Federal Census and in Sheldon Family Association Records. Since that time, the SFA's records have been updated.

While little is known about Polly, except that she lived a short life into young adulthood, one can only imagine a vibrant child living with a family that was so well spoken of in newspapers of the day.

In the following year, contact was made with the Sexton of the cemetery who located her headstone and relayed that it had been broken off at the base. In 2006, the Sexton met me at the cemetery to show his work of having repaired Polly's marker. Thank you George! At that moment I also realized that her parents were most likely right next to her, marked only by a concrete base. It is a base that would normally have pillars installed but they were either never installed or otherwise missing.
