The Elyria Republic, April 17, 1902:

"Sylphina Sheldon was born in Courtright [Kortright] township, Delaware County, N. Y. October 2, 1817, was married to Bradley Woodmansee February 2, 1837, moved to Ohio and settled in LaGrange, October 1848, where she lived until her death which occurred April 4, 1902 aged 84 years. She was one of the pioneer settlers who helped to make the wilderness blossom like a rose, for no more industrious person ever lived. A lazy person found no favor with her. She numbered her friends by hundreds. Her home relations were pleasant and happy in every respect and the ties binding the family together were very strong. She leaves one son, two brothers, six grandchildren and many friends to mourn their loss."

Sheldon Family History:

Sylphina Maria Sheldon, who often went by her middle name, was the daughter of Benjamin F. and Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon. She and Bradley B. Woodmansee had three children, Benjamin Thomas Woodmansee (1838 - 1893), Polly M. (1844 - 1864), and David (1852 - 1919). Polly and David are also interred in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery, and it is next to Polly where a concrete base was set to hold two pillars, which are missing. Located in the "old" part of the cemetery in the south-western area, this base was set next to their daughter's headstone and it is believed to be the resting place of Bradley B. and Sylphina Maria (Sheldon) Woodmansee. An older map indicates these plots were designated "Woodmansee." A like base was used for her parents also located in this cemetery.

Local newspapers frequently memtioned members of the family and helped tie lose ends together in research. While Polly died at age 19, Benjamin T. Woodmansee married Elizabeth Jane Luce in Medina County and they had 10 children of record. Benjamin moved to Michigan in the late 1880's / early 1890's where he died in Gratiot County of consumption in 1893, and his death record and headstone were located there in 2006. Elizabeth Jane Luce returned to LaGrange and married Egbert Hastings. David married Ida L. Knapp, and while they did not have any children, they were often noted in newspaper clippings for their community interests.

This family has been of great interest in my research, and I would appreciate meeting anyone who is involved in their genealogy. Iola Brewton (1926 - 2009) of California was very supportive in my research of the Woodmansee family.
