Born in Thormanby, Yorkshire, England; John enlisted 23 September 1861, Co. E, 20th New York Heavy Artillery; promoted Corporal 1 October 1861, Sargeant 17 November 1861, 2nd Lieutenant 1 June 1863 after 2nd Battle of Bull Run, 1st Lieutenant 26 April 1864; Wounded in the right leg by a shell 3 June 1864 at Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. The leg was amputated on the battlefield and he recovered to retire a Captain. Discharged South Carolina 20 February 1865.
