"Ned Chesebro, 19, of Sherburne, died Wednesday in Oneida City Hospital from injuries received about 2 a. m. Dec. 26 when struck by a car on Route 20, one mile east of Nelson. The car which struck Chesebro was operated by Russell Folds, 22, Syracuse. At the time of the accident, Chesebro was standing on the highway watching as a tow car pulled the car in which he had been a passenger, from the ditch. Chesebro had been a passenger in a car owned and operated by a Esper Heigle also of Sherburne. The car was ditched when Heigle fell asleep at the wheel. Neither Chesebro or Heigle were injured when the car left the road. Folds was arrested by Trooper Archie Greene after the accident for failure to have his car under control, and upon arraignment later that day before Justice of the Peace Lyndon Jones, Town of Nelson, was fined $15. Chesebro was born in Norwich on Jan. 21, 1933, a son of Fred G. and Mildred Tripp Chesebro. He was a graduate of Sherburne Central School and had been a student for one year at Delhi Agricultural and Technical Institute. He was employed by Hobart Chesebro, building contractor, Sherburne. He was a member of First Methodist Church, Sherburne, and during high school was active in sports. He played basketball from 1949-51, and was captain of the team in 1951. He played on the baseball team, 1949-51. He was on football varsity for four years and during his last two years was one of the outstanding players. During his senior year, he was subscription manager of the yearbook, The Opus. He leaves his parents, two brothers, Neal W. and Norman E.; one sister, Mrs. Harry Conley, all of Sherburne."
