Melvin was the son of Owen W. and Lola J. Lewis Lester. He was a career Navy man, having served during WW II as well as the Korean War. He rose through the ranks to retire as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.

He married Miss Darlene Lewis from Iowa. They resided in California the majority of their married lives. Darlene passed away before Melvin did, and Melvin shared a household with my widowed grandmother, Mabel Lewis Wright for many years until they were separated by death.

My grandfather died long before I was born, and Melvin was a surrogate grandfather to my sisters and me. We called him "Uncle-Grandpa" Melvin, and I think he was proud of that. We were certainly proud of him.

Regardless of his military background, a kinder, sweeter man could not be found. I know his kind heart has found a peaceful place of repose.
