SISTER HELEN M. PATRICIA CORCORAN
Sister Helen M. Patricia (Corcoran), 87, chairman of the Romance Language Department at Immaculata College for more than 50 years and the recipient of numerous awards for her contributions to Spanish culture and literature, died Saturday at Chester County Hospital, West Chester following a short illness. Prior to her death she resided in retirement at Camilla Hall on the Immaculata College campus.
Sister Helen was a daughter of the late Patrick H. and Ellen A. Corcoran and sister of Alice Chambers of West Chester.
A graduate of St. Agnes School, West Chester, and West Chester High School in 1913, she received her B.A. from Immaculata College, her master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. fro Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Sister Helen circumnavigated South America as a guest speaker and teacher at many colleges and universities and was honored by Peru, Brazil and Spain for her work in literature there. Spain distinguished her with the "Order of Alphonso". the highest award for work in Spanish literature. Sister Helen also received the "People to People" award in 1975 from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m., today at the Chapel at Camilla Hall at Immaculata College.
