Yrjö was the son of Jaakko and Sanna Erkkilä. He was christened on the 26 November 1874.

He married first to Maria Maki (Mary Hill) on the 1st of July 1905 and they had two children: Jaakko (Jack) born 1907 and Elmi Marie, born 1911. Shortly after the birth of Elmi, Mary died from blood poisoning at her home.
During his life in Montana, Gust worked as a lumberman.
Gust then married Lyydia Juhantytär Kero Panula on the 8th of September 1911 and although they had no children of their own, Lyydia raised Jack and Elmi as her own.
Gust died of Hemiplegia of the left side due to Chronic Myocarditis. He was hospitalized for one day before he passed away.
He was buried the day before his 66th birthday.
