On April 17, 1980, San Antonio police officers and fire department were dispatched for a house fire. When the fire department arrived, they found Gladys Jean Ramirez, age 29, inside the house, deceased. Neighbors had called the fire department after hearing a loud explosion and seeing flames coming from the house. Several neighbors and an off-duty police officer who was passing by tried to gain entry to the house to locate the victim but were pushed back by the flames.
Later that day, Dr. Ruben Santos of the Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy on Ms. Ramirez. The results of the autopsy showed she was murdered, and the death was ruled a homicide.
