He served in the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific.
Vaughn had a lifelong career as a railroad engineer, first with the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad, then with the Northwestern Railroad, both based out of Marshalltown. He retired in 1985.
Vaughn was a member of the First Methodist Church on Main Street in Marshalltown. He enjoyed playing golf and collecting railroad memorabilia.
Vaughn loved the railroad and took an active part in the restoration of the old depot at Quarry, Iowa. Vaughn and his wife, Ina Mae, stopped out to the depot periodically and helped Mary Ann Gardner Halverson with her 10-year project of restoring the Quarry Depot, the oldest Chicago & Northwestern depot in the state of Iowa, and the only stone depot in Iowa. Vaughn shared a lot of railroad information with Mary Ann, and Ina Mae, a volunteer genealogy researcher at the Marshalltown Public Library, always looked for historical data for the project. Vaughn also convinced the Northwestern Railroad to donate a caboose to the city. It is now on display on South 3rd Street in Marshalltown.
