Ulysses S. Grant died Tuesday, June 2, at Memorial hospital following an illness of six weeks. He was 89 years of age. Mr. Grant was prominent in livestock circles from the time he arrived here in 1886 until his recent illness.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Grant. His father was kin to General U. S. Grant who later became president of the United States and his mother was a direct descendent of two of our first presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. When a small boy he moved with his family to Wisconsin, and at the age of 13, again moved with them to Iowa, where he grew to young manhood.

In 1885 he came west to Tie Siding with two brothers seeking a place to locate. A year later, in May, 1886, the three brothers came to Converse County, all taking up land in Boxelder park, where he made his home until his death. In 1900, Mr. Grant returned to their old home near State Center, Ia., where on June 1 of that year he claimed his childhood sweetheart, Miss Gertrude Chamberlain, as his bride. Following their marriage they returned to their ranch at Boxelder park where their 12 children were born, nine of whom survive. They are: Jess, John, Elmer and Allen, all of Boxelder; and five daughters, Mrs. Genie Henderson of Oak Creek, Colo.; Helen Smith, Mrs. Zelma Hiser, Mrs. Amy Hansen and Mrs. Bessie Hiser, all of Boxelder and Glenrock. Other survivors include a brother, Theron Grant, and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Herzog of Casper; 32 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Three children died in infancy and Mrs. Grant preceded him in death 30 years ago.

Information was obtained from his obituary and cemetery records.
