Chestine (Gibbs) Ripple, age 98, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011, in Sweetwater, Texas.

Graveside funeral services will be 10 A.M. Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

She was born on July 29, 1913, in Hico, Texas. She married Joe W. Ripple on July 8, 1943, in Pecos, Texas. Joe served in the U. S. Air Force, and was killed on September 1, 1944, while stationed in England during World War II.

Chestine was a graduate of Sweetwater High School, and went on to attend McMurry for one year. She graduated from Texas Tech University in 1938. She also studied at San Francisco State University. During the War, she worked for the Air Force in Pecos, Texas, Mt. Home, Idaho, and Oakland, California. She also taught elementary school for nine years in Rural Texas…two years in Jones County, three years in Dickens County, and four years in Concho County. She then taught 30 years in Oakland, California, working with second, third, and fourth graders. She retired from the Oakland Public School in 1973 at the age of 60.

Chestine was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the California Teacher's Association, had been a member of Eastern Star #352, as well as the Sweetwater Garden Club and B&PW. She also enjoyed her hobby of needlework.

She is survived by several nieces including Carolyn Collier and husband Charlie of Benicia, California and nephews in California, and two sisters-in-law, Alene Breckenridge and Fae Ripple of San Angelo, Texas.

She was preceeded in death by two brothers, Billy and C. A. Gibbs, and one sister, Emmarie Gibbs Reed.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be given to a favorite charity.
