Charles Albin Gustafson, 76, died suddenly at his home on Riverview Street, Portland. He was born on the island of Stansvik, Rönnäng, Sweden, a son of August Gustafsson and Anna Helena (Johannesdotter) Gustafsson and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1907; he re-met Amelia Charlotta Johnson in Brooklyn, New York, to where she had emigrated from Tjörnekalv, Rönnäng, Sweden in 1903; they married in Brooklyn June 3, 1911, and moved to Portland, Connecticut in 1913.
Charles was a boat builder and constructed many craft which won honors in races, including the "Duckling" a boat which won several Bermuda races, and the "Harpoon" which was reportedly the fastest cruiser in the area of the Connecticut River where Charles lived and worked. Charles was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Portland.
He left his wife, Amelia, three sons, Arnold C. Gustafson of Portland, Alf H. Gustafson of Westbrook, and Clifford A. Gustafson of Portland; four daughters, Miss Ethel Gustafson, Mrs. Joseph (Margaret) Randazzo of Portland, Mrs. Edwin W. (Helen) Spencer of Middletown and Mrs. Ingvar (Jane) Olson of Higganum; 3 brothers and 2 sisters in Sweden; also 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
