An obituary published in the Shelbyville Democrat on March 23, 1917 for John A. Tackett, the oldest native resident of Shelbyville, stated that he had died on Friday [March 16, 1917]. At the time of his death Mr. Tackett was president of the Shelby County State Bank and closely identified with the commercial life of Shelbyville.

Mr. Tackett was born in Shelbyville, September 28, 1832, in the early days of the settlement of Shelby County and had been a witness of almost its entire growth. He was the son of the late John and Enfield Tackett, natives of Virginia, who had come to Shelbyville in 1829. He was educated in the Shelbyville and Paris schools. After finishing school he clerked in a store for a time, but soon engaged in the buying of stock. About 1850, in partnership with Joseph Sutton and John M. Thornton, he embarked in the grocery business which was continued for 25 years, but in 1875, Mr. Tackett retired to engage in several other lines of business and to superintend his farming interests, having at that period become an extensive land owner. In 1895 Mr. Tackett was one of the organizers of the Shelby County State Bank, of which he was at that time named director and of which he was president at the time of his death. Mr. Tackett's name stood high in financial circles, as his integrity in money matters was unimpeachable. His personal character was such as to gain him warm esteem among his neighbors and many acquaintances. He was a member of the Shelbyville Lodge of Odd Fellows.

On January 20, 1880, Mr. Tackett married Miss Flora N. Cash, daughter of the late Henry H. and Rebecca Cash of Westfield, Ill. Mrs. Tackett, with one daughter, Irma, survived the decease of her husband. The daughter is the wife of Dr. H. E. Monroe of this city. There are two grandchildren, Florence Rachel and Henry Tackett Monroe.

The funeral was held from the family residence on North Broadway. The Rev. J. A. Tracy of the Presbyterian Church and the Rev. J. L. Douthit of the Unitarian Church were in charge of the services. Burial was in the family mausoleum in Glenwood Cemetery.
