Son of James Thomas Southern and Elmina Mayo Mason, he was born in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. James had three siblings at age 7 when his mother died. Later his father remarried and he had additional siblings. His father died after he was grown and had family, but no burial location has been found. James Thomas spent most of his years as a farmer and raised two daughters to adulthood. He lost a son and daughter in early years in Denton County, Texas.
He married Susan Evelyn Roper in 1890, daughter of George W Roper and Susan A Hooton Roper. He preceded her in death by only three years.
