Melvyn John Otterstrom was a husband and father who was a controller for the Utah Paperbox Co. by day and temporarily working part-time as a bartender one evening a week to help a relative. He was an Eagle Scout and played the trumpet. Fun-filled and fearless, Melvyn joined the 19th Special Forces Group of the Utah National Guard and loved to climb mountains. He enjoyed learning, hunting, cars, and spending time with his family.

Melvyn and his wife Kathy were married on December 19, 1969. They put each other through college at the University of Utah, bought a house, and planned a future for their baby boy, Jason, now a grown man who resembles his father a great deal. Melvyn would have been so proud of what Jason has accomplished in his life.
_______________

A prison escapee murdered Melvyn while Melvyn was tending bar in what was probably a botched robbery. The killer later murdered another man during another attempted prison escape and was executed on June 18, 2010, for his crimes.
